A Yusuf Bala Usman Institute has been established in honour of the memory of Dr. Bala Usman, who died in 2005. He was a one -time lecturer at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and a former Secretary to the Government of Kano State.
A statement by the board of directors said “The main objective of the Institute is to carry out research on issues of Nigeria’s unity and development. The ideas that the late Dr Yusuf Bala Usman espoused, some more than 40 years ago, are eminently relevant to the critical issues confronting Nigeria today.”
It added that the Institute would examine and disseminate his ideas which they believe can provide a foundation for creating a new approaches and new ideas to move the nation forward.
The board is headed by Dr. Olusegun Osoba, a longtime friend of Usman who both served on the Committee that drafted the Nigerian Constitution, they both a Minority Report of the 1979 Constitution. Others are Norman Perchonok, a sociologist, Prof Gideon Tseja, Atahiru Bala Usman, a toxicologist, Prof. Usman Tar, a defence studies specialist and Hadiza Bala Usman, the managing director of the Nigeria Ports Authority.
