Danlami Kurfi queried the authority on which the Kano state governor, Abdullahi Ganduje and the state government relied on to banish the emir. Speaking to Legit.ng on Tuesday, March 10, Kurfi said the actions of the Kano state governor against Sanusi is political.

“His dethronement and banishment are political, pure politics. What did he do? Did his people say they don’t want him again?” Kurfi said.

He also called on the governor and the Kano state government to take legal actions against Sanusi if they think he has done anything wrong.

“If you think he did anything wrong, take him to court and when the court hears the matter and find him guilty, he will be sent to the prison,” Kurfi added. He said:

“It is only the court has the right to banish anyone, why do we have to stick to the old and traditional way of doing things, traditional leaders are also humans and as citizens have the same right as enshrined in the constitution.”

“Sanusi even when dethroned has the right to go anywhere he wants to go to, the should be allowed his freedom of movement,” he said.

Stating that the Kano state governor is only worried that Sanusi’s loyalist would probably continue to visit him in Kano, Kurfi said the sacked emir has the right to move around as provided by the 1999 constitution as amended.

Also commending the achievements of the sacked emir in the entire northern region, the former lawmaker said Sanusi is one of the best things that happened to northerners in terms of education, enlightenment and advocacy for good governance.

Kurfi said: “We’ve never had any emir like SLS, in terms of education both Islamic and western education, nobody all over the north can match up to him; he is the only one who tells the truth to power, to the governors in the north and even president, he challenges anyone.”

“So being a good man can cost you this much including your freedom?”

Kurfi inquired. Kurfi continuing said warned all leaders in the north including the emirs to sit up and publicly condemn the action of the Kano state governor against Sanusi.

“Since he became emir, he is the only emir we have in the north who during leads his people in prayers during Hajj or Jumaat prayer, no other emir does that in the north, only Sanusi,” Kurfi added.

He said: “Kano is the mother of all the north, if this is happening in Kano, other emirs should be ready because it will extend to all parts of the region.”

Kurfi also urged the deposed emir to seize the opportunity to exercise his right through legal means against the action of the governor and the Kano state government.
