Why Euro American University Bestowed Doctorate Award on NIMASA Director, Kabir Murnai


Fresh facts have emerged, on why the European American University(EAU)  conferred an Honorary Degree  of Doctor of Science (D.Sc Hons) in Public Administration  and Corporate Governance , Honoris Causa  , on The  Wakilin Katsina , Alhaji Mohammed Kabir  Murnai, who is a  Director at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency(NIMASA).

The University bestowed the honour, with all the right and privileges of the Institution, on Alhaji Kabir , at the Nigerian Employers Consultative Association (NECA) Secretariat in Ikeja Lagos, recently  , sequel to his fulfillment of the conditions of the Degree Award.

The Senate of the University, explained that the conferment of the Honorary Award on the Wakilin Katsina was due to his series of achievements, namely his contributions to the socio economic development of Nigeria, his vast exposure, experience and academic laurels and  the various conferences , seminar and workshops he  has attended, as well as  his other meritorious services to the nation.

The University said that Murnai was  also honoured for his  best practices in Transport Logistic  , Maritime Business Policy Administration and Governance,Shipping Project Management Excellence and Public Community Servant-Hood Leadership Recognition Titles, as well as his selfless and philanthropic endeavours to humanity.

Dr Kabir Murnai   began his early education  with the Quaranic School ,  where he learned   and studied  Quaranic recitation  and basic Islamic knowledge .After his Primary and Secondary education from 1971 to 1983 ,  he proceeded to the University of Sokoto , now Usman Dan Fodio University ,where he obtained a Bachelors Degree in Sociology in 1989.

On completion of his University education ,he later served the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)  Programme  with the Nigerian Railway Corporation.

In furtherance of his Western education , he attended the International  Maritime Transport Academy  and Shipping  and Transport College  in Rotterdam , Netherlands, between 1996 and 1997, where he obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Port , Shipping  and Transport ,while he also got a Masters of Business Administration (MBA)  Degree in 1981 at the CIMI Business School, New Mexico , USA.

He began his working career in the then Kaduna State Ministry of International and Home Affairs, where he worked briefly,  as an Information Assistant Officer .After his University studies , he worked  at the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Ebute Metta , Lagos as a Personnel Officer,  and rose to the position  of Senior Personnel Officer, in 1994, in recognition of  his dedication to duties.

Subsequently, in 1994, Alhaji Murnai transferred his service  to the National Maritime  Authority(NMA) , now Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency(NIMASA),  as a senior Administrative Officer , and over the years rose to the Directorate level.

Within his work career , he also attended various national and international seminars, workshops and conferences  which include ‘General   Shipping Management’ at the Shipping Corporation of India Maritime Training Institute , Bombay, India, 1998 and  ‘Protocol ,Public Relations & Mgt Course’ at London  Corporate Training , UK in 2004 .

Others are ‘International Protocol Officers Course’, Knowledge Research Consult, Accra, Ghana , 2006;  ‘Strategic Public Relations, Protocol  and Travel Management Course’  at London  Corporate Training , England , UK in 2008; ‘Good Governance in Public Sector Administration’ in London, UK in  2010 and  ‘Enhancing Corporate Maritime Management  Capacity Course’ , PBTG Consulting . London , UK in 2012 .

He was also at ‘The Second African , Mining and Training Conference’, Regional Maritime University(RMU),Accra, Ghana, 2009; ‘Good Governance in Public Sector Administration’ in London, UK,2010, ‘Enhancing Corporate ,Maritime  Management Course’; PBTG Consulting  , London , UK, 2012 and  ‘Anatomy  of Shipping , Cambridge Academy of Transport , Cambridge , England , 2014.

His unquenchable  search for knowledge also took him to the   ‘Corporate Executive Development Programme’, (CEDP) at World Maritime University,(WMU) , Malmo , Sweden, 2014, ‘Public –Private  Partnership Strategies ,Methods and Project Structuring Techniques’ at the Institute of Public –Private Partnership(P3), Arlington, Virginia , USA in 2017.

Likewise , he attended the ‘Executive Leadership Programme’ at the Institute of Capacity Building , State University of Kansas, USA, in 2019 and ‘Maritime Business Management  Course’.at the Gobham International  Ltd, Dubai, UAE, 2019.

The courses which the Wakilin Katsina attended locally, include ‘Fleet Management and Road Safety’(FMRS) Purchasing and  Logistics centre, Lagos , 1995,’ Computer Appreciation Course’, Tritech Computer Ltd, Lagos , 1995,’Work Attitude and Productivity’, De Bronx Nigeria Ltd, Lagos, 1997and  ‘Workshop for Training Managers’,Nigerian Institute for Transport Technology(NITT), Zaria, 2000.

Likewise, some of them are ‘Corporate Planning and Implementation Workshop’,Radox Consult Ltd, Lagos, 2001,’Training Workshop on Research , Methodology and Project Feasibility for Improvement of Project Planning and Implementation’ , Kalisa Konsult Ltd. Kaduna, 2002, Computer User Programme, Syntax Solutions Nig. Ltd, Lagos , 2002  and ‘Improving your Personal Effectiveness Course’, LBS, Pan Atlantic University, Lagoa, 2010.

In addition to the numerous courses,  Murnai  also served as a member /delegate , of various committees within and outside his organization and represented the Federal Government  in the committees .

Some of them are,  member of ‘the Nigerian delegate  for the inspection  of Ports of Malaysia and Singapore’  with the members  of the  National Assembly  in 2005 ; and a  member , ‘Nigerian delegation  to Nigeria/Nordic countries Business Investment Forum’  ,  to all the Scandinavian countries in 2009, headed  by the former Nigerian President , Dr Goodluck Jonathen , when he was the Vice President.

The trips were said to have opened new vistas for Nigeria’s Economic  co-operations within the regions.

The Wakilin Katsina was also a member  of the Nigerian delegation  for ‘Third Edition  of Nigeria / Canada  Business  and Investment  Form’ in Ottawa  and Toronto , Canada, from September  to October 11, 2011, while he was twice  a member , delegate  representing  his organization  at the popular ‘Oil Technology Conference(OTC)’ at Houston , USA in 2011 and 2013.

He was also a member of the ‘Nigerian Maritime Expo(NIMAREX) Planning Committee’ between 2011 and 2015,which was organised by the Indigenous Ship owners  Association(ISAN), now NISA in collaboration with FMOT, while the event was always chaired by former Presidents / Heads of State of Nigeria.

In the realm of professional membership, he is a member  and Fellow of various  professional  organizations  and institutions  while he has been inducted  as a Fellow  in key professional  organizations  such as ‘Fellow Chartered Institute  of Management  and Leadership’, USA  and ‘ ‘Fellow Chartered  Institute  of Transport  Administration  of Nigeria’, CIOTA.

It was as a result of his numerous contributions to his community and Katsina State and the country, that made His Royal Highness, Alhaji (Dr) Abdulmuminu Kabir Usman , CFR  Emir of Katsina  to confer  on him, the traditional title of ‘Wakilin Katsina’ and member of the Emirate Council, making him the first holder,  of such title in the history of the Emirate.

The EAU said it awarded the various Doctorate Degrees to The Wakilin Katsina and others , who are so worthy, to mark its seventeenth anniversary, since its establishment in 2003 , stating  that, the Institution is designed around the concept of a virtual network.

It also explained that, to obtain a degree at the University , one will need to enroll at one of its member colleges , via its external programme , which offers distance learning opportunities.
