To boost the development of sugar locally here in Nigeria through aiding sugarcane farmers to maximise their productivity, do you know that the Buhari administration has just recently released the sum of N42bn as financial grants to the farmers to enable the country achieve this objective?

The announcement of the release was made by President Muhammadu Buhari himself on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 when he was inaugurating the $73m Nigeria Sugar Initiative at the State House – a scheme drawn by his administration to accelerate the growth of the sugar sub-sector in the country.

With this development, it is expected that sugarcane farmers in sugarcane growing areas like Numan in Adamawa State, Sunti in Niger State, Lafiagi and Bacita in Kwara State, Toto and Tunga in Nassarawa State, and some other areas known for growing the product will benefit immensely from this initiative.

It is expected that, apart from curbing the importation of sugar which this initiative is meant to achieve, this scheme will also help in the expansion and establishment of sugar factories across Nigeria with the great possibilities of many new jobs and business opportunities in the sugar value chain.
