Director General National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Mustapha Habib Ahmed has commissioned the Automatic Weather Observation Station installed by NEMA at Nasarawa State University Keffi.
He said that the project was based on a request from Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) for partnership with NEMA towards improving its data acquisition for monitoring of hydro-meteorological phenomenon (weather forecasting) in the country. He further explained that President Muhammadu Buhari had granted the request from NIHSA, leading to the installation of the weather station at the University to support disaster early warning, preparedness, mitigation and academic research.
In his remark, DG NIHSA Clem Nze appreciated NEMA for the partnership and said the installed equipment has increased the number of platforms used by his Agency.
Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa State University Prof Suleiman Mohammed also appreciated NEMA and NIHSA for selecting his university to host the equipment. He explained that the station would be useful to the university for teaching and research, in addition to being utilized by NIHSA.
Earlier, a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding was signed by NEMA, NIHSA and the University before the handing over of the equipment by DG NEMA to the user and host.
