AGILE, Red Cross To Train 6000 Katsina Students

Katsina State Ministry of Education, through the State Field Office of Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE) in collaboration with the Nigerian Red Cross Society, has commenced the training of 6000 teachers and students across the state.

The objective of the raining is to empower the teachers and students with basic first aid skills to be able to support themselves in time of need, according to the AGILE state project coordinator, Mustapha Shehu.

He said critical issues of gender based violence have been addressed in addition to the issue of personal hygiene.

“Additionally, evacuation techniques and tools have been administered on the teachers and students, especially to be able to identify early warning of attacks,” he said.

He said after the ultimate aim was to build the capacity of students and teachers in those areas and the Red Cross will help in stepping down the training to all the schools which will eventually lead to the establishment of schools safety clubs.

In his remarks, the chairman Nigerian Red Cross society Katsina state branch Dr. Aliyu Idris Funtua, said the training was designed to acquaint the students with the technicalities on how to apply First Aid, take care of emergency situation and disaster management in times of crises especially now that there are attacks on schools.

He added that the training was centred on the four sub-headings which include Student Protection and Safeguarding, Violence Schools, Assertiveness, Negotiation skills and Evacuation Drills.
